Title of Job : Clinical Nurse Manager II - Day Ward Grade : CNM II Reports to : CNM III Day Ward, ADON, Director of Nursing Reporting Relationships : CNM I, Staff Nurses, Student Nurses, HCAs & Support Staff Type of Contract : Full Time - Permanent Purpose of the Role The role of the Clinical Nurse Manager II is pivotal to the co-ordination and management of the nursing / healthcare assistant / decontamination services in the Day Ward Unit. He / she will work in close liaison with the Clinical Nurse Manager III - Day Ward Manager to facilitate high quality nursing care in a safe environment for patients and staff while making the best use of resources. The post holder will also provide clinical supervision, guidance and direction for all nursing and healthcare attendant / decontamination staff as well as acting as a resource person by facilitating and advising Consultants and staff on Endoscopy Unit best practice. Key Duties & Responsibilities To reflect professional / clinical leadership and management that promotes efficiency, innovation, teamwork and continuous quality improvements. To lead and participate in internal and external audits and accreditation processes such as JAG and JCI. To be responsible for the rostering of staff in order to achieve an adequate and equitable skill mix. Allocate staff mix (in conjunction with Clinical Facilitator and CNM 1), efficiently & effectively according to analysis of clinical needs and available resources. To be responsible for all Day Ward lists pertaining to the Day Ward schedule and ensuring that all slots are utilised and staffed appropriately. Any additional points requested onto lists must be sanctioned by the CNM2 in the unit. To empower their staff and show effective communication and encourage staff feedback regularly. To ensure all staff are up to date with all mandatory training and are released from the unit to attend training days and that all staff feel supported in their learning. To ensure that all policies / procedures are up to date and put into practice daily within the unit. To ensure that all staffs continual professional development is discussed and planned accordingly. Use discretion and decision-making regarding patient care, referring appropriately to other CNM staff, medical staff and other disciplines where necessary. Pro-actively direct the Nursing Team to ensure effective two-way communication and encourage a culture of innovation and improvement with the focus constantly on patient wellbeing. Carry out Consultants' instructions to ensure that pre-operative, operative and post-operative functions are delivered to patients to the best standard of safe care. Promote collaboration within the multidisciplinary team. Maintain accurate daily and weekly records on the Time and Attendance Management system including; attendance / annual leave / sick leave / absenteeism / maternity leave / bank hours to be processed by Payroll department. Take a pro-active approach to the development of clinical skills in collaboration with the Clinical Facilitator and in particular to maintain self-development in clinical and managerial skills. Keep abreast of developments in current and utilise the research / knowledge obtained as appropriate to the Day Ward and Hospital Policy. Supervise and influence standards of professionalism in the Day Ward, e.g. adherence to sick leave policy, absenteeism monitoring, confidentiality, dress code, hospitality, diplomacy, etc. Ensure all nursing and non- nursing duties are carried out professionally and safely. Develop collaborative working relationships and take a pro-active, practical and objective approach to ensure that tension and bad feeling does not build up. Focus on the issue, not the personality, when dealing with conflict. Utilise and manage IT systems and PiMs as necessary. Be aware of and comply with Health and Safety protocols to provide and maintain a safe environment for self, colleagues and patients. Pro-actively provide for and ensure the physical safety of the patient and staff at all times. Comply with the medications policy, ensuring that regulations for safekeeping and recording of schedules drugs are adhered to. Liaise and co-operate with the CNS in Infection Prevention & Control in the prevention of hospital-acquired infection. Engage with key stakeholders to ensure hygiene standards are maintained for patients, visitors and themselves. Report and take corrective action, as necessary on adverse occurrences, as per Hospital policy. Implement equipment / disinfection check lists and report any faults or defects. Ensue that all damaged equipment is speedily withdrawn for repair or replacement. Participate fully in promoting best practice and in proactively managing quality and safety standards at unit level ensuring the delivery of quality patient care taking into account the specific needs of individual patients. Embrace change and act to implement evidence based best practice where appropriate. Take responsibility for stock control, ensuring adequate levels of required supplies are held in the Day Ward at all times. Assist in the orientation of new staff members and participate in and conduct performance assessment of assigned staff in conjunction with other CNM staff. Liaise with the hospital decontamination lead to ensure implementation of standards and recommended practices are monitored and maintained. Deputise for the Day Ward Manager as required. Communicate effectively in the English language, written and spoken, as appropriate to job requirements. Perform other duties as may be assigned from time to time. Essential Qualifications Registered General Nurse with The Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), or eligible to register with the NMBI Desirable Qualifications Knowledge of JCI / JAG or similar accreditation system Essential Experience Minimum of 5 years post registration experience in the acute hospital setting within the last 9 years Have a minimum of 2 years in Day Surgery / Theatre / Medical / GI Nursing. Have experience of working in a multi-professional environment. Desirable Experience Completed a formal recognised post registration education relevant to the role (e.g. Management) or a commitment to undertake same within an agreed timeframe.
