STAR: CFD, Building Physics and Wind Work Placement

See it differently

You see the world through a unique lens and that’s exactly what we need. We embrace how you see things differently – it’s essential for creating a sustainable future.

Arup is a global consultancy with advisory and technical expertise across more than 150 disciplines. We guide, plan and design the future of the built environment. Globally, each year we recruit hundreds of graduates and students who help us see things differently and solve the most complex challenges facing our clients, climate and communities.

The Opportunity

As a work placement student part of the STAR team at Arup, you will:

  • Develop knowledge and skills in understanding and analysing local microclimates
  • Assist with studies to identify the impact of different climate conditions on microclimate, pedestrian wind comfort and air quality.
  • Learn how to perform building physics and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses to determine critical conditions to support and improve design decisions (wind & thermal comfort, emission dispersion, ventilation, mechanical heating and cooling, building physics)
  • Assist in undertaking climate investigations to understand the risk posed by natural hazards and the physical threat of climate change.
  • Collaborate with other structural engineers, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and risk consultants on innovative buildings and infrastructure projects.
  • Work closely with our in-house technical and digital specialists to help find unique solutions for our clients’ challenges
  • Attend design team meetings and present design outcomes.

Is this role right for you?

We're looking for students who are currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s or higher Degree in Civil, Environmental, Structural, Mechanical, Building Engineering, or other related disciplines.

We also value:

  • Fundamental knowledge of fluid dynamics, building physics, energy modelling and/or environmental physics.
  • Basic coding, scripting and / or digital awareness skills.
  • Interest in the built environment.
  • Experience in computational fluid dynamics
  • Familiarity with Python or other programming languages.
  • Experience or familiarity with the built environment, i.e. buildings, transportation infrastructure, and other civil infrastructure through research

Alongside your degree, we look for the following core attributes;

  • Changemakers: A passion for sustainable development and creating a better world is key.
  • Innovative minds: We’re looking for critical thinkers who embrace new ideas and challenge the status quo.
  • Growth seekers: You have a growth mindset, always eager to learn and explore new ways of working.
  • Adaptable adventurers: You’re ready to take on any challenge that comes your way.

Please note, in the event of high applicant volume, this role may be closed ahead of the advertised closing date. Early application is recommended
