Job Title : Staff Nurse Department : Orthopaedic Ward Reports to : Nurse Manager Overall Purpose of the Role To deliver exceptional patient care in a professional, respectful, and compassionate environment, ensuring that quality, dignity, and safety are at the heart of all nursing practice. The Staff Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for assigned patients in line with hospital standards and policies. Key Responsibilities Clinical Care Provide direct, evidence-based nursing care to assigned patients. Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including history taking, nursing diagnoses, and identification of care needs. Monitor, document, and communicate changes in patients' conditions, proposing revisions to care plans as required. Implement and evaluate individualised plans of care in accordance with hospital policy. Administer medications and treatments safely in line with physicians' orders. Perform admission, transfer, and discharge procedures, ensuring a smooth patient journey. Apply and supervise infection control, aseptic techniques, and isolation procedures. Document all aspects of patient care accurately, maintaining confidentiality at all times. Educate patients and families regarding treatment, care, and health promotion. Professional Practice Adhere to the NMBI Scope of Practice Framework (2015). Ensure patient needs are assessed individually and addressed in an optimal clinical environment. Involve families and significant others in care planning, where appropriate. Participate in quality improvement, audits, and hospital accreditation processes. Support hospital health promotion and policy development initiatives. Managerial & Leadership Responsibilities Escalate concerns or issues promptly to the Nurse Manager. Demonstrate knowledge and application of hospital policies, procedures, and risk management processes. Manage complaints effectively and professionally. Maintain effective interdisciplinary communication and teamwork. Deputise for the Nurse Manager when required. Contribute actively to ward and hospital communication systems. Personal & Professional Development Attend all mandatory training and maintain a professional portfolio. Engage in continuous professional development and attend relevant courses / study days. Participate in performance reviews with the Nurse Manager. Act as a preceptor / mentor for students and newly appointed staff. Take responsibility for personal learning needs and contribute to nursing research where appropriate. Other Duties Manage time effectively and remain flexible to meet hospital needs, including floating to other departments as required. Undertake any other duties reasonably assigned in line with the role. Person Specification Qualifications Registered General Nurse with NMBI (in good standing). Experience Minimum one year orthopaedic nursing experience (desirable). Competencies & Skills Teamwork : Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team; motivated and innovative. Communication : Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to convey information clearly and respectfully. Organisation : Proven planning, time management, and adaptability to changing work demands, including roster flexibility (night duty, on-call, etc.). Knowledge : Demonstrated experience in orthopaedics or acute care; awareness of current best practices and national healthcare strategies relevant to nursing.
