Role Overview The Mechanical Technician will be responsible for the assembly, installation, and commissioning of custom-built automation machinery.
Working closely with mechanical design engineers, electrical / controls teams, and project managers, the technician will ensure machines are built to specification, on time, and to the highest quality standards.
This is a hands-on workshop and site-based role that also requires occasional travel for customer support and site acceptance testing.
Key Responsibilities Assemble, fit, and install mechanical components and subassemblies for automation machinery.
Work from detailed mechanical drawings, BOMs, and assembly procedures.
Perform precision fitting, alignment, and adjustment of moving parts (e.g., conveyors, robots, packaging systems).
Support factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT).
Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues during build, test, and installation phases.
Carry out mechanical modifications and continuous improvements as required.
Work cross-functionally with electrical, controls, and design teams to ensure seamless integration.
Follow company quality and safety procedures in line with food and pharma standards.
Essential Requirements Recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Fitting, Toolmaking, or equivalent trade.
3+ years experience in mechanical assembly / build within automation, packaging machinery, or special-purpose equipment.
Ability to read and interpret 2 D / 3 D CAD drawings.
Strong knowledge of pneumatics, bearings, drives, and motion systems.
Hands-on experience with precision fitting, alignment, and use of workshop tools.
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Flexibility to travel for site installations and commissioning (domestic and international).
Preferred Requirements Experience in pharmaceutical or food industry equipment builds (knowledge of GMP standards).
Exposure to robotics, delta robots, or cobots in automation environments.
Familiarity with vision systems and mechanical integration of sensors / cameras.
Knowledge of hygienic design principles for food and pharma machinery.
Experience with CE marking requirements and machine safety standards.
Strong documentation skills for build records, FAT / SAT reports, and mechanical checklists.
Continuous improvement mindset (Lean / 5 S experience an advantage).
