Nurse - Medical Centre, Student Services

The Nurse will deliver a comprehensive medical, health, and welfare service to students and a limited service to staff. This role encompasses both treatment and preventative care, with a strong emphasis on health promotion and education. The nurse will be a key member of the Student Services team, contributing to the overall wellbeing of the university community. The range of duties assigned to the Nurse may vary from time to time. This position will be based in the Cork Campus but may involve travel between MTU campuses. The successful candidate will report to the Student Services Officer. This line management arrangement may be amended as MTUs organisational structure evolves over time. Main Duties and responsibilities of the position : Clinical Care o Provide and administer general nursing services to registered students of MTU, including initial contact, assessment, treatment, referral, and follow-up. Conduct investigations and tests as required. o Support university doctors with clinical duties, including assistance, arranging and prioritising appointments, referrals, processing tests and such like. Health Promotion & Education : o Develop and implement health education and promotion programmes. o Lead campaigns on topics such as substance abuse, mental health, lifestyle, and stress management. o Deliver training on health, hygiene, first aid, and safety. Operational Duties : o Maintain medical supplies, equipment, and drug inventory. o Keep accurate records of Health Unit activities and prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders. o Advise students and staff on healthcare entitlements under current legislation. Collaboration & Policy Development : o Liaise with Student Services staff, external health professionals, and community health services. o Participate in university committees and contribute to health policy development. o Assist in organising student wellbeing events and staff development programmes. Administrative & Strategic Support : o Contribute to the development of management information systems. o Undertake additional duties as assigned by university authorities. Duties During Non-Semester Period : During periods of reduced student activity, the nurses role shifts toward planning, administration, and service development : Service Planning & Review Evaluate health service usage from the previous semester. Update clinical policies, procedures, and protocols. Order supplies, restock medical equipment, and inspect first aid kits across campus. Training & Education Prepare health-related content for student orientation programmes. Health Promotion Preparation Design and develop health campaigns and educational materials for the upcoming semester. Liaise with external organisations such as the HSE, mental health charities, and NGOs to support health initiatives. Student Engagement (Smaller Scale) : o Provide care and support to summer students, including international, postgraduate, and research students. Professional Development : o Attend courses, conferences, and CPD activities to maintain NMBI registration and stay current with best practices. Essential Criteria : Registered General Nurse (RGN) and registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Desirable Criteria : Experience in a GP practice or similar environment Experience of working in the area of womens health. Experience in Health Promotion activities. Knowledge of medical computing systems and software programmes. Important Notes : Screening and short-listing take place based only on information submitted on the application.
