Job description

Purpose of Position : This is a fixed term academic position within the School of Business and Social Sciences. The main responsibility of the post-holder will be to support the delivery of our initial teacher education programme for teaching in the Further Education and Training (FET) sector and to contribute to the overall delivery and development of education programmes within the School The post-holder will also support on the development of college-wide Learning, Teaching and Assessment strategies and policy and practice in these areas. As such, the role involves occasional responsibilities in relation to the professional development of staff and faculty on the scholarship and practice of learning, teaching and assessment in higher education and participation on academic committees. The School of Business and Social Sciences The newly formed School of Business and Social Sciences at NCI brings together a number of NCI's long standing, well established disciplines under the one School. The Social Sciences section of the School now incorporates our education programmes. The School delivers programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level on both a full-time and part-time basis, in the areas of initial teacher education for the Further Education and Training (FET) sector, early childhood education, adult and workforce education and professional development for educators Reporting to : Dean of School of Business and Social Sciences, Vice-Dean of Social Sciences Key Relationships : Dean of School of Business and Social Sciences Vice-Dean of Social Sciences Academic Operations and Programme Co-ordinators The Director and colleagues in the Early Learning Initiative Placement Supervisors and Placement Tutors Principal and teaching staff in the FET sector Education networks in the Further Education and Training sector (including Programme Approvals Committee (PAC), Teaching Council, SOLAS, ETBs, Early Childhood Ireland, Plé, and FE Colleges). Faculty and Associate Faculty within the School Key Responsibilities : Lecture to students on education programmes with combinations of, teaching in FET, early childhood education, Act as an Academic Programme Director (where necessary) Lecture on certificate, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes on a broad range of education related subjects. Design and deliver curriculum and education innovations in relation to programme improvement and academic enhancement. Occasionally develop and deliver teaching and learning professional development programmes for NCI faculty and staff. Provide professional support to students in their learning activities. Facilitate tutorials associated with lectures. Participate in programme committees as appropriate. Engage in academic research, agreed consultancy and development work as appropriate. Preparation for teaching and all other work-related activity. Provide such information as may be required by the College related to the activities of the role. Engage in the assessment processes of the College by setting and marking examinations and assignments and attending assessment boards and liaising with external examiners. Set, correct and give written feedback on project work, research work and dissertation. Undertake the duties of the role in accordance with the requirements of the College Quality Assurance arrangement. Facilitate skills development workshops. Liaise with library re : reading materials, booklists, etc. Develop new and existing course material, using new learning technology and delivery mechanisms in particular. education practice placements, digital literacy, technology enhanced learning and educational research methods. Programme Development Assist in the drafting of submission documents, liaise with the validating bodies, promote, implement and review programmes. Research Carry out research relevant to the field of education including regular publications and presentations in peer reviewed journals and presentations at both national and international conferences. General Be available to students outside of class contact hours for guidance and support. Represent the college at functions and promotional events such as exhibitions, school visits, open days, recruitment evenings and other external events. Act as a supervisor or mentor for students completing specialist topics and dissertations. Work on short courses, training and consultancy. Visit students in placement settings as appropriate for educational practice programmes. Key Requirements : The appointee will be expert in education with specialist knowledge of scholarship and practice in at least one of the following areas : educational practice for teaching in further education and training (FET), Strategies of Learning, Teaching and Assessment, Educational Theory, Practice Placement, Digital Learning Design, Technology Enhanced Learning, Educational Practice for Diversity and Inclusion, Educational Research Methods, Education for Sustainability (the post-holder should have teaching competence in at least two of these areas). Qualifications & Experience Required : PhD in Education or closely connected discipline is essential Excellent teaching skills Active research and academic publication track record in the scholarship of educational practice and / or learning and teaching or related fields Experience of initial teacher education especially in relation to the FET sector Experience of teaching in Higher Education Knowledge of Irish education sector policies and practice Ability to prepare course material and programme docu mentation Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends Ability to build relationships and collaborate Adherence to professional standards of teaching Excellent communication skills, time management and digital technology skills He / she must be a self- starter with the ability to work independently Demonstrate capability to develop new programmes Contract : 9 Months Fixed Term Contract Salary : Senior Academic Band (€70,400 - €92,934) Annual Leave : 34 Days per annum pro rata Hours : Full Time To Apply : Please apply with a CV and cover letter both in PDF format ONLY, quoting reference number : NCI 1033 to : by 5 : 00 pm, 2nd October 2025 .
