Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, S.I. Feto Maternal Medicine

Overview

The person chosen will be part of a multidisciplinary team under the direction of the Master / CEO in TCH and under the direction of the Master / CEO and CCOO / Clinical Director in Midland Regional Hospital.

The role will work as part of the Obstetric (Feto-Maternal Medicine) and Gynaecology Divisions within the Hospital.

The successful candidate will possess the skill-mix necessary to address current deficiencies and will provide clinical leadership in the MDT context, including hand-over, ward-rounds, clinical risk and morbidity / mortality conferences, teaching, training and audit.

The Consultant's reporting relationship and accountability for the discharge of his / her contract is to the Master / CEO and CCOO of the hospital.

Responsibilities and Accountability

Should be fully trained to the level of Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with sub-speciality training in Feto-Maternal Medicine.

Demonstrate leadership in all matters relating to patient care and play a key role in the further development of women\'s health services, including planned expansion of surgical gynaecological services at the Hospital.

May have additional experience in other specialist areas to meet the needs of the Hospital; there may be opportunities to develop other special interest sessions depending on clinical need.

Be responsible for the clinical management of patients under his / her care, and, in liaison with consultant colleagues, ensure continuity of care when the candidate is absent.

Specific responsibility and accountability

Clinical

Provision of Obstetrics Feto-Maternal services to the CWUIH, including fetal intervention where required.

Responsibility for education, training and audit in relation to these services, with involvement and provision of services at the Coombe.

Other commitments as required by the Master / CEO and CCOO.

On-call commitment to the Coombe Hospital.

Attend at TCH as determined by TCH and in emergencies as required, and remain in attendance thereat as long as services are required.

Attend any clinic or site maintained by the TCH within the group catchment and provide diagnostic, treatment or consultation services as appropriate.

Participate in development of duties and functions pertinent to the Consultant\'s area of competence as set out in the Clinical Directorate Service Plan / TCH and in line with Employer policies.

Ensure duties are undertaken to minimise delays for patients and disruption of services.

Alternate with other Consultants in the Department and act for them during short-term absences, including weekend and off-duty leave; lead the Fetal Medicine Department on a rotational basis.

Provide, as appropriate, consultation in respect of other Consultants\' patients and provide teaching and lectures for student midwives / nurses, other midwives / nurses in training and other staff.

Supervise and be responsible for diagnosis, treatment and care provided by non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs) treating patients under the Consultant\'s care.

Examine persons referred and furnish full reports of findings, unless objections are raised by the referred person.

Provide on-call obstetrics and gynaecology services at the Coombe Hospital; provide outpatient obstetric and fetal-maternal services; provide in-patient obstetrics and gynaecology services; provide emergency gynaecology services on call; provide labour ward cover; provide operating theatre services.

Management & Administration

Work within the hospital\'s service plan and levels of service as determined by the Employer.

Service planning will be progressed through the Clinical Directorate / TCH structure or other applicable arrangements.

Participate in the development and operation of the Clinical Directorate / TCH structure and related management or representative structures; receive training and support to participate fully.

Formally review the execution of the Clinical Directorate Service Plan with the Clinical Director / Employer; internal review of determinations may be sought as needed.

Participate in and facilitate production of data / information required to validate delivery of duties and inform planning and management of service delivery.

Maintain appropriate liaison between the department and patients\' normal medical attendants.

Human Resources

Co-operate with the expeditious implementation of the Disciplinary Procedure as per Consultants Public Only Contract 2023.

Ensure appropriate medical cover is available at all times with regard to the European Working Time Directive as it relates to doctors in training.

Participate in selection processes for non-Consultant Hospital Doctors and other staff as appropriate; the Employer will provide training as required and ensure a Consultant representative of the relevant specialty is involved in selection.

Risk Management

Participate in clinical audit and proactive risk management and provide required data / information in accordance with regulatory, statutory and corporate policies.

Financial

Assist in the preparation of annual estimates / budgets of expenditure for revenues for which the role is responsible.

General

Reside conveniently to TCH at a location approved by the TCH.

Perform other duties appropriate to the office as assigned by the TCH or other authorised officer.

The appointment is under the terms of the Public Only Contract 2023 for consultants in the public service, including participation in hospital management, awareness of resource constraints and clinical autonomy while practising.

Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by the Master / CEO and CCOO of TCH Hospital and the General Manager MRHP.

The duties may change over time.
