We are seeking a talented and experienced Unity Technical Artist to join our mobile games team. The ideal candidate will possess proven expertise in creating shaders, developing in-engine tools, optimizing real-time graphics, and crafting visually stunning VFX.

You will have a strong foundation in Unity coding, 3D modelling and animation, with proven proficiency in Maya and Unity. This role requires a strong technical background combined with an artistic eye to support the development of high-quality gaming experiences. You may also be involved in creating high-quality assets and animations, optimised for the mobile framework, that enhance the gaming experience and contribute to the overall artistic vision of our projects. This will be a 12 month fixed-term contract.

Responsibilities

  • Shader Development : Design and implement complex shaders to achieve high-quality visual effects aligned with the project’s artistic direction.
  • VFX Creation : Develop dynamic real-time visual effects and particle systems using Unity, ensuring they meet technical constraints and performance requirements.
  • In-Engine Tool Development : Build and maintain custom tools within Unity to streamline workflows and enhance productivity for artists and developers.
  • Pipeline Optimization :  Identify inefficiencies in art pipelines, propose solutions, and develop tools to improve workflows for asset creation and integration.
  • Performance Optimization : Analyse game performance, optimize assets, and implement solutions to ensure smooth gameplay across target platforms.
  • Collaboration : Work closely with artists, programmers, and other departments to bridge the gap between art and engineering, ensuring seamless integration of assets. Mentor and support less experienced colleagues within Technical Art and Game Projects.
  • Technical Documentation : Create and maintain documentation for tools, pipelines, shaders, and workflows to support knowledge sharing within the team.
  • 3D Modelling :  Create High quality 3D models for characters, environments, and props using Maya. Adhering to strict Brand and Company guidelines.
  • Texturing :  Apply textures and materials to models as per project requirements.
  • Animation :  Develop animations for characters and objects, ensuring smooth and engaging motion.
  • Feedback Incorporation :  Be able to incorporate feedback from senior team members and adjust work accordingly.
  • Self-Management :  Capable of seeking their next task, able to deliver within agreed deadlines and budget.
  • Self-Driven :  Capable of working on their own development, keeping up to date with trends and technology. Willing to learn new techniques.

Requirements

  • Experience as a Unity Technical Artist,
  • Proficiency in Unity’s rendering pipeline, including shader creation (HLSL) and material setup.
  • Strong scripting skills in C#, Python, or other relevant programming languages for tool creation.
  • Experience in Mobile Games a bonus.
  • Strong command of Maya for 3D modelling, texturing, rigging and animation.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Suite and Substance Painter.
  • Strong understanding of 3D art principles, including modelling, efficient topology & poly count, texturing, rigging, and animation.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git)
  • Strong understanding of game design principles and mobile game development.
  • Knowledge of asset optimization techniques for real-time graphics.
  • Solid understanding of lighting, VFX principles, and artistic styles.
  • Ability to create visually compelling assets while adhering to technical constraints.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a passion for exploring new technologies and techniques in real-time graphics.
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively across disciplines.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • A portfolio showcasing relevant work is required.
  • Experience with additional software (e.g. Unreal Engine, ZBrush, Premiere) is advantageous.
  • Experience using Jira, Slack, Float, Teams and Office for work management and communication is a nice to have.
