Speech and Language Therapy Manager

Purpose of Post

To work in collaboration with the Speech and Language Therapy Manager in planning, developing, co-ordinating and evaluating the service to meet the needs of the service users and the objectives of the organisation. The Senior Speech and Language Therapist will be responsible for the provision and delivery of a high-quality Speech and Language Therapy service in the designated clinical area(s) and will carry out clinical, educational and administrative duties as required.

Eligibility Criteria Qualifications & Experience

Candidates must on the latest date receipt of applications :

  • Be registered as a Speech and Language Therapist by the Speech and Language Therapists Registration Board at CORU
  • Have three years relevant post qualification experience with at least one years experience working with adults with acquired brain injury.
  • Hold a recognised dysphagia qualification and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrate evidence of leadership initiatives, service development and quality improvements.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Demonstrate commitment to CPD / PDP in areas relevant to the role.
  • Have experience supervising Staff Grade and / or student SLTs.

Desirable :

Experience in working with persons with Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness (PDOC) and / or complex neurological conditions.

  • Experience working with patients with long term acquired brain injury including prolonged disorders of consciousness.
  • Experience of interdisciplinary teamwork.
  • An interest or knowledge / skills in Assistive Technology.
  • Experience and competency in Tracheostomy management.
  • Evidence of clinical audit / research.
  • Experience and competency in objective Dysphagia assessment (e.g. Videofluoroscopy, FEES)

  • Principal Duties & Responsibilities

    Professional / Clinical Responsibilities :

    The Senior Speech & Language Therapist will :

  • Be responsible for assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment / intervention programmes for service users according to professional standards.
  • Be able to make highly specialist clinical decisions following assessment of complex cases.
  • Arrange and carry out assessment and treatment / intervention programmes in line with national and local policy / guidelines.
  • Communicate results of assessments and recommendations to the service user and relevant others as appropriate.
  • Document all assessments, diagnoses, treatment / intervention plans, clinical notes, relevant contacts and summaries in accordance with department and professional standards, organisational requirements, the Freedom of Information Act and GDPR.
  • Collaborate with service users, families, carers and other staff in goal setting and treatment / intervention planning.
  • Provide clinical leadership in the day-to-day running of the service by supporting and supervising staff, prioritising and allocating work and promoting positive staff morale.
  • Be responsible for maintenance of standards of practice of self and designated staff.
  • Foster close working relationships with colleagues and other relevant professionals in maximising the service users' potential.
  • Provide support, information and education in relation to communication and / or feeding, eating, drinking and swallowing disorders etc. to service users and relevant others.
  • Participate in teams as appropriate, communicating and working in collaboration with the service user and other team members as part of an integrated package of care.
  • Liaise closely with MDT members in the clinical setting to maximise service user outcomes and act as a key worker when required.
  • Attend clinics and participate in relevant meetings, case conferences and ward rounds.
  • In conjunction with the Speech and Language Therapy Manager, contribute to the development and implementation of procedures, policies and guidelines while adhering to existing standards and protocols.
  • Maintain professional standards in relation to confidentiality, ethics and legislation.
  • Seek advice and assistance from the Speech and Language Therapy Manager with any assigned cases or issues that prove to be beyond the scope of his / her professional competence in line with principles of best practice and clinical governance.
  • Operate within the scope of Speech & Language Therapy practice as set out by the Irish Association of Speech & Language Therapists.
  • Participate in and develop activities which support health promotion.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the Speech & Language Therapy Manager.
  • Show initiative and innovative ways of delivering cost effective, evidence based services e.g. education, training, groups as appropriate
  • Education and Training :

    The Senior Speech & Language Therapist will :

  • Avail of and participate in own supervision with Speech & Language Therapy Manager or other designated person.
  • Actively engage in performance achievement with the SLT manager.
  • Engage in planning and performance reviews, as required with the Speech and Language Therapy Manager.
  • Participate in mandatory and recommended training programmes in accordance with departmental / organisational guidelines.
  • Maintain and develop professional expertise and knowledge by actively engaging in continuing professional development e.g. reflective practice, by attending and presenting at in-service events, training courses, conferences, professional courses or other courses relevant to practice, participating in research etc.
  • Manage, participate and play a key role in the practice education of student therapists and promote and engage in the teaching / training / support of others as appropriate.
  • Engage in peer support with Speech and Language Therapist colleagues.
  • Health and Safety :

    The Senior Speech & Language Therapist will :

  • Comply with the policies, procedures and safe professional practice of the Irish Healthcare System by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations and standards.
  • Document appropriately and report any near misses, hazards and accidents and bring them to the attention of relevant / designated individual(s) in line with best practice.

  • Administrative :

    The Senior Speech & Language Therapist will, in consultation with the Speech & Language Therapist Manager :

  • Be responsible for the co-ordination and delivery of service in designated area(s).
  • Ensure good working practice and adherence to standards of best practice.
  • Promote quality by reviewing and evaluating the Speech & Language Therapy service, identifying changing needs and opportunities to improve services.
  • Assist the Speech and Language Therapy Manager in service development, including policy development and implementation.
  • Ensure the maintenance of accurate records in line with best clinical governance, the organisation's requirements and the Freedom of Information Act, and provide reports and other information / statistics as required.
  • Engage in service audit and demonstrate the achievement of the service objectives.
  • Collect and evaluate data about the service user group and demonstrate the achievement of the objectives of the service.
  • Represent the department / profession / team at meetings and conferences as appropriate.
  • Deputise for the Speech and Language Therapy Manager as required.
  • Participate in the identification and ordering of clinical equipment and resources.
  • Engage in technological developments as they apply to the service user and service administration.
  • Keep up to date with change and developments within the Irish Health Service.

    Tenure

    The current vacancy available is a Permanent post on a part-time basis.

    The post is pensionable. A panel may be created from which permanent and specified purpose vacancies of full or part time duration may be filled. The tenure of these posts will be indicated at "expression of interest' stage.

    Appointment as an employee of Peamount Healthcare is governed by the Health Act 2004 and the Public Service Management (Recruitment and Appointment) Act 2004.

    Remuneration

    Remuneration is in accordance with the salary scale approved by the Department of Health : Senior Speech and Language Therapist.

    Current salary scale with effect from 1 March 2025 : €63, 279 (point 1) to € 74, 509 (point 09

    Working Week

    The hours allocated to this post are 21 hours per week. The allocation of these hours will be at the discretion of the Department Head and in accordance with the needs of the service.

    HSE Circular 003-2009 "Matching Working Patterns to Service Needs (Extended Working Day / Week Arrangements); Framework for Implementation of Clause 30.4 of Towards 2016" applies. Under the terms of this circular, all new entrants and staff appointed to promotional posts from Dec 16

    2008 will be required to work agreed roster / on call arrangements as advised by their line manager. Contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 8am-8pm over seven days to meet the requirements for extended day services in accordance with the terms of the Framework Agreement (Implementation of Clause 30.4 of Towards 2016

    Annual Leave

    Probation

    All employees will be subject to a probationary period as per the probation policy. This policy applies to all employees irrespective of the type of contract under which they have been employed. A period of 6 months' probation will be served :

    On commencement of employment.

    Fixed term to permanent contract.

    Permanent employees commencing in promotional posts will also undertake a probationary period relating to their new post.

    Pension

    Employees of Peamount Healthcare are required to be members of the Hospitals Superannuation Scheme. Deductions at the appropriate rate will be made from your salary payment.

    If you are being rehired after drawing down a public service pension your attention is drawn to Section 52 of the Public Services Pension (Single and Other Provisions) Act 2012. The 2012 Act extends the principle of abatement to retired public servants in receipt of a public service pension who secure another public service appointment in any public service body.

    Maternity

    Maternity leave is granted in accordance with the terms of the Maternity Protection Acts 1994 and 2001.

    Sick Leave

    Peamount Healthcare operates a Sickness Absence Management policy in line with the new Public Service Sick Leave Scheme as introduced in 31

    March 2014.

    Pre-Employment Health Assessment

    Prior to commencing in this role a person will be required to complete a form declaring their health status which is reviewed by the hospital's Occupational Health Service and if required undergo a medical assessment with this department. Any person employed by Peamount Healthcare must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

    Validation of Qualifications & Experience
